Auf der Farm der Familie Sawyer wird im Sommer 1955 die Tochter des örtlichen Sheriffs Hal Hartman (Stephen Dorff) tot aufgefunden. Zwar kann den Sawyers der Mord nicht nachgewiesen werden, doch veranlasst Hartman aus Rache, dass Verna Sawyer (Lili Taylor) das Sorgerecht für ihren Sohn Jedidiah entzogen und dieser in eine Nervenheilanstalt gesteckt wird. Zehn Jahre später verhilft Verna dort einigen Insassen zur Flucht, um ihren Sohn endlich ganz im Sinne der Familientradition zum Killer erziehen zu können. Tatsächlich befindet er sich unter einer Gruppe von vier gefährlichen Jugendlichen, die mit der Krankenschwester Lizzy (Vanessa Grasse) als Geisel Reißaus nehmen. Bei welchem der Patienten es sich um ihn handelt, ist allerdings unklar, haben diese doch zu ihrem eigenen Schutz neue Namen verpasst bekommen. Sheriff Hartman nimmt die Verfolgung auf...
